Down the Stretch We Go…

As Emily mentioned in the last blog post, it’s that time, there are sooooo many reasons to get excited and pumped for the Lexington Legends 2009 baseball season. We are so close. As we go down the stretch…the countdown continues. We’ve got so much going on during the next 42 days that it’s hard to keep it all straight.

This past week, yours truly, good ole SuperMario made stops at Bryan Station Traditional Magnet Middle School for one of our smokeless tobacco presentations. For those who don’t know, the Legends tag-team with KCMOS to help tell students the dangers of using tobacco products, specifically, smokeless tobacco. Bryan Station actually was my old middle school growing up, so it was a homecoming of sorts for me.

Thursday, led me all the way down to the sweet spot known as Lawrenceburg, Kentucky as I was one of the guest speakers for Anderson County High schools career/college fair. anderson co.jpgI talked to their students about the LEGENDS and my job, what I do, jobs we offer at Applebee’s Park to students their age. The kids were great and had awesome questions and the fine staff at the school were in even better. Thanks to Lathe Brady and everyone else for having us out at Anderson County High School!

amber philpot.jpgWhile there, I also ran into an old co-worker of mine from WKYT 27NEWSFIRST, Amber Philpot. She is the lead female anchor for the local CBS television station here and does a great job. She also just so happens to be a big fan of…the Lexington Legends fan…so I had to grab a picture of here for “old times sake” as well so all you loyal Legends fans could see, Ms. Philpot.

Seeing that it IS 42 days until the start of the 9th season of baseball here at Applebee’s Park for the Lexington Legends, we are doing all that we can to be involved in our community and “let the world know” that baseball season is definitely live and well here in the Bluegrass.

Make a Wish-Read Across America 004.jpgBig L made stops throughout Lexington on Sunday and Monday. Sunday, he was at the Lexington Make-A-Wish Bowl. Where local celebrities, came to the Southland Bowling Lanes and it proved to be a success as media folk from all the television and radio stations made it out for the event as well former and current KY wildcats were apart of the festivities as well.

Monday, in the United States of America kicked off “Read Across America” in all of the public schools across the nation. The Legends obviously took part in this wonderful adventure and made an appearance today at Russell Cave Elementary in Lexington. Yours truly, SuperMario & Big L stopped in and read a few Dr. Seuss stories to 1st graders and it proved to be a success as the kids laughed, smiled asked questins and had a ball…which is definitely the goal. If you ever would like Big L, SuperMario or anyone from the Legends staff to make an appearance at your school, call us TODAY at Applebee’s Park. 859.252.4487. We can try and make it happen!

Make a Wish-Read Across America 006.jpgAlrighty fans, its about that time for me to start getting on the horn and back to work, but please do check back in often and regularly as we gear up for yet another fun-filled year of crazyiness with the Lexington Legends!

Happy Monday!

until next time,

keep it SUPER fans!

Legends Radio Caravan Complete…National Anthem Tryouts, Complete, Next Up…

Well Hello Hello Hello! Hiii Legends Fans!

Welcome into the 162nd edition of Diggin’ In to the Legends with SuperMario and EBJ!

We’re EXACTLY 56 days away (YIKES!!!) from Opening Day 2009 for the Lexington Legends baseball team and the excitement is definitely starting to build here at good ole Applebee’s Park.

SANY0831.JPG
SANY0841.JPGLast Thursday, marked the conclusion of the Legends Radio Caravan that literally criss-crossed the Central Kentucky area. As mentioned during the last couple of blogs, we made stops in five different counties and met with folks from all walks of life. Our final stops on the express brought us to Danville and Lexington. In Danville, we met up with students from the Kentucky School for the Deaf down at a Fazolis restaurant on Hustonville Road. The kids were great and enjoyed all the festivities we had to offer.

SANY0851.JPGOver back in the home city of Lexington, our home turf, the world famous Makers Mark Club just inside Applebee’s Park hosted Legends fans as we ended our weeklong caravan.

But, since we’re gearing up for the big day, there obviously, is no end in sight as this past weekend was a BIG 2-days for the Lexington Legends. Our 2009 National Anthem Tryouts were held and definitely was a SUCCESS!!!!

Hundreds of people took turns belting out The Star-Spangled Banner at Fayette to audition for a chance at singing the national anthem at a Lexington Legends home game this year.

It’s Monday now, so EVERYONE here in our office is trying to recover from the weekend and get ready for our next projects that are just around the corner.

 oh and ps…HAPPY PRESIDENT’s day!

Despite WICKED weather…the Legends Radio Caravan is STILL Going..

Hey there Legends fans!

Two blogs in one day, by your two favorite people EVER, good ole SuperMario and EBJ!

As it’s been a common theme in the last few blogs, I hope everyone is doing well and has survived this craaaazy weather. It definitely has been a mess.

As Emily (EBJ) mentioned in her post, we kicked off the 2009 Legends Radio Caravan Tuesday, in Cynthiana (Harrison County). Myself, Keith Elkins, (NEW Radio broadcaster), and Alan Stein (Team president) were featured on “Coffee Break with Rick Chasten,” which is a radio program on WCYN. This show is followed by the locals in that town. We were on bright and early from 8am-9am. And, yes, I had to rise and shine at 5:30am to make the drive for the show. YIKES!!!

Legends Caravan 2009 (Somerset-Richmond) 013.jpgYesterday, Wednesday, capped off day numero dos (Day number 2) of the Caravan as
we booked it down to Somerset, Kentucky!
 Backyard Burgers was our site,
and they will be a title sponsor for Legends games on WSFC/WSFE.  They will
carry our opening game (Monday, April 13).

Former Legends great, TURNED Atlanta Braves,
Legends Caravan 2009 (Somerset-Richmond) 002.jpgJosh Anderson was great as always. He signed autographs, talked to visitors, did an interviews.
Attendance could have been better, but the storm hit just a few minutes after 3pm, and the high winds prevented us from using the new inflatable, REALLLLY BIG L!
We started to pack it up, and got it back down and put away just as the rain
came crashing down.

In Richmond, we set up at EKU in the lobby of Legends Caravan 2009 (Somerset-Richmond) 014.jpgthe Powell Student Center. Charley Taylor, longtime Legends pitching coach, had planned to attend, but missed yesterday morning due to illness. He was going to appear on EKU sports webcast, Colonel Cast.

Today we’re in Danville at Fazoli’s on Hustonville Road from 3-4 p.m.
Then we’re back here at Applebee’s Park in the Makers Mark Club from 5:30-6:30 as Emily mentioned in her post..

If I don’t see you out at the Caravan stops, then I hope to see you out at the National Anthem tryouts on Saturday and Sunday!

until next time,

keep it SUPER fans!

Happy GroundHog Day!!!!

Well Hello baseball fans, welcome into the 158th edition of minor league baseball’s hottest and #1 blog…Diggin’ In to the Legends!

Punxsutawney Phil.jpgAs the title of this fantastic blog reads, it’s Groundhog Day here in America and the world’s most famous groundhog (Punxsutawney Phil) saw his shadow Monday morning, predicting that this already long winter will last for six more weeks.

The annual ritual takes place on Gobbler’s Knob, a tiny hill in Punxsutawney, a borough of about 6,100 residents some 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

According to German superstition, if a hibernating animal casts a shadow on Feb. 2 — the Christian holiday of Candlemas — winter will last another six weeks. If no shadow is seen, legend says, spring will come early.

Well fortunately, spring time in Lexington means baseball season is here and in play. As we always do, the countdown is definitely on as we inch a little closer and closer to Opening Day 2009.

70 days is how close we exactly are and you can bet, everyone here in the Legends front office is pumped and jacked for Monday, April 13, 2009!

Our 2009 season slogan is Fun and Games…Just Add You. So, with that our wheels are starting to spin and our marketing/promotional plan for the season is beginning to roll so make sure you keep checking out this blog to find out where YOU can see the Lexington Legends out here NEXT.

MLB.com reporter, Alyson Footer posted an updated story of Legends catcher, Max Sapp, who has been battling viral meningitis..Check that below as well:

Sapp Max_4399.jpgHOUSTON — Catching prospect Max Sapp, hospitalized for nearly a month with viral meningitis, was discharged and returned home Friday.

“He’s very glad to be back home,” said his agent, Doug Rogalski, in an e-mail Friday afternoon.

The 20-year-old Sapp had been hospitalized since Dec. 11, when he was taken to an Orlando-area emergency room following an apparent seizure after completing his early afternoon workout.

Sapp was diagnosed with viral meningitis and chronic sinus disease. Doctors determined that the sinus condition led to an abnormal susceptibility to the meningitis virus.

Sapp’s course of treatment included heavy doses of antibiotics to treat the meningitis and pneumonia, and included a surgical procedure to rectify his sinus issues on Dec. 14.

Sapp required the use of a respirator for more than two weeks after suffering three episodes where he stopped breathing.

Alright, Legends Fans…that’s about it on yet another successful edition of Diggin’ In to the Legends…be sure to keep your webpage locked into minor league baseball’s HOTTEST blog!

BREAKING NEWS: Former LEGENDS Player Deals With Serious Illness..

Happy Holidays, Seasons Greetings, Happy New Years and welcome into the 151st edition of Diggin’ in to the Legends on this 5th day of January!

It’s back to work at Applebee’s Park as everyone in the Legends front office has their eye on the prize as the countdown to Opening Countdown begins and all the wheels start getting rolling! The home opener is Monday, April 13, 2009 and we are ready for another great season of FUN and of course, Legends games!

Speaking of getting back to work…that’s definitely what I’ve got to get back to doing now.

DSCF3460.JPGBut, before I go, take a look at the article from MLB.com reporter as she writes on Max Sapp, who has been with the Legends the last two seasons at the catcher position.  He has been very ill over the last few months due to a bout with Meningitis. Read Below to find out more on his situation. All of the Lexington Legends wish the best for Max and hope he has a speedy recovery during this difficult time.

“HOUSTON — Catching prospect Max Sapp, hospitalized for more than two weeks with a severe case of meningitis, took a first step toward recovery on Wednesday when he was able to breathe on his own without the help of a respirator.

According to general manager Ricky Bennett, the 20-year-old Sapp will soon begin therapy to recover from the illness, which has left him with significant memory loss.

“He doesn’t know who the president is; he doesn’t know who his girlfriend is,” Bennett said. “He doesn’t have all of his memory back. He was unconscious for quite some time. It’s a blessing he’s with us. It’s pretty scary stuff.”

Meningitis is an infection of the fluid of the spinal cord and the fluid that surrounds the brain. People sometimes refer to it as spinal meningitis. Meningitis is usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection.

Sapp was breathing with the help of a respirator after undergoing surgery to repair a severe sinus infection and contracting meningitis, as reported by the Houston Chronicle Tuesday night. According to the report, Sapp was unable to breathe on his own because of occasional seizures.

Sapp is expected to be hospitalized for quite some time as he continues his recovery.

How this will affect Sapp, the club’s first-round pick in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, from a professional standpoint remains to be seen.

“We’re not thinking about baseball right now,” Bennett said. “We have to get him healthy and back to normal. That’s all that matters right now.”

until next time,

keep it SUPER fans!
